1. INTRODUCTION Pest c o n t r o l i n urban a r e a s can b e s u c c e s s f u l and c o s t - e f f e c t t v e only when a p p l i e d properly. The o r g a n i z a t i o n of t h e c o n t r o l 5s of p a r t i c u l a r importance i f t h e f a c t is taken i n t o c o n s i d e r a t i o n t h a t a l a r g e number o l arthropod s p e c i e s i n f e s t t h e urban areas and only some a r e v e c t o r s o r r e s e r v o i r s of d i s e a s e s o r a n e l s a n c e t o people i n t h e i r homes o r o f f i c e s . The c o n t r o l should be based on a good knowledge of the h i o l o g i c a l and e c o l o g i c a l p e c u l a r i t i e s of each p e s t s p e c i e s and t h e i r t y p i c a l h a b i t a t s during [:he d i f f e r e n t s t a g e s of t h e i r development, t h e methods and rncans, e t c . Success w i l l depend t o a l a r g e degree on t h e a v a i l a b i l i t y of w e l l organised, highly t r a i n e d and equipped s p e c i a l i z e d groups t o c a r r y out t h c p e s t c o n t r o l a c t i v i t i e s . The second important point is t h e s u s c e p t i b i l i t y s t a t u s of p e s t s t o t h e d i f f e r e n t chemical compounds o r tila biolog9,cal c o n t r o l agents. The o b j e c t i v e should not only be t h e r e d u c t i o n i n p e s t popolati.ons, but a l s o t h e p r o t e c t i o n of t h e environment and prevention of t o x i c exposure of people and animals. All t h i s is r c l a t e d t o t h e economical yide OF t h e problem and d i s e a s e s may i n c r e a s e i f f i n a n c e s are not enough t o c a r r y o u t p r o p e r v e c t o r c o n t r o l . It. Te c l e a r t h a t v a r i o u s f a c t o r s are c l o s e l y r e l a t e d and t h a t i n o r d e r t o s o l v e t h e problems i t is necessary t o c a r r y out c o n t r o l measures based on proper i n v e s t i g a t i o n s and ensure i n t e r s e c t o r and i n t r a s e c t o r c o l l a b o r a t i o n ( L 2 ) .
